What Is PT/INR Testing?

Prothrombin Time (PT) is a laboratory test that measures the time required for blood to clot through the extrinsic pathway (factors VII, X, V, II, and fibrinogen). This test is one of the most frequently performed hemostasis tests in clinical laboratories.

Tips for Accurate Hemostasis Testing

  1. Sample collection — Use citrate tubes (blue cap) with a blood-to-anticoagulant ratio of 9:1
  2. Avoid hemolysis — Traumatic blood collection can affect results
  3. Process promptly — Samples must be processed within 4 hours of collection
  4. Centrifugation — 2,500 RPM for 15 minutes to obtain platelet-poor plasma
  5. Daily QC — Run normal and abnormal controls before patient samples
